Artist Statement

Stephen Boyd has been producing generative art since 2003. The code, the rules, and the surrender of control to a system are as much a part of the work as the final print.  His work explores emergence, randomness, and the boundaries of authorship. These are questions that connect his practice to the 1960s computer art of Vera Molnár and Manfred Mohr, Sol LeWitt's instruction-based practice, and the open-source community built around Processing. Boyd has exhibited in solo and group shows, and presented at the Marshall McLuhan Festival and Siggraph. In addition to his studio practice, Boyd runs hands-on generative art workshops, teaches, and gives public talks at OCADU and the University of Toronto on algorithmic design, generative art and data visualisation.
