Irina Dubiniski

ARTIST STATEMENT
Irina Dubinski is a Toronto-based visual artist, Anglican priest, spiritual director, and educator whose work brings together visual art, spirituality, and an enduring interest in human experience. Working in acrylic, oil, and digital media, her artistic practice centres on three interconnected themes: portraiture, the natural world, and contemporary reimaginings of sacred narratives.
She is especially drawn to portraiture because no two faces are ever the same; each carries its own history, character, and dignity. Nature and animals are enduring sources of inspiration and restoration, while her work with sacred narratives grows from her parallel vocation in Christian ministry. This includes individual illustrations as well as thematic series created for exhibition and use in worship and contemplative spaces.
Her expressive style combines loose, layered and energetic brushwork, non-naturalistic colour, and semi-abstract representation with richly textured surfaces incorporating impasto, embroidery, geometric patterning, splatter, and drips. She frequently paints on upcycled household fabrics in place of traditional canvas and sometimes incorporates repurposed vintage frames. Across these subjects and media, her work invites empathy, contemplation, and a broader understanding of beauty beyond conventional ideals.
Dubinski has studied Byzantine iconography, Western art history, and art therapy. Visual art is an important part of both her spiritual practice and her work as a priest and educator, where she uses imagery and art-making in teaching, spiritual direction, intergenerational ministry, and contemplative practice.
Her work is held in private collections in Canada and abroad. She has exhibited in Ontario galleries and exhibition spaces including the Dufferin Museum, Propel, Northern Contemporary, and Leslie Grove, participated in Toronto outdoor art shows including ArtWalk in the Square and the Danforth East Arts Fair, and displayed her work in several branches of the Toronto Public Library.
