Ajineen Sagal

Artist Statement

As a fiddle player, teacher, and lifelong artist, my work is a combination of music, education, and the creative expression I inherited from my parents, both of whom are artists. My mom- a visual artist, and my dad -a potter, chef and actor. A graduate of the prestigious Studio 58 Theatre School ( Vancouver) , I grew up in an environment rich with artistic inspiration and I was drawn to both visual art and performance. Over the years, my journey has been shaped by my love of fiddle music, as well as my immense love and experience in theatre, where I discovered the importance of storytelling and connection, often through music.

Also I discovered the importance of local community, which my solo show will celebrate. I am so grateful for the people and businesses right here in my beautiful neighbourhood.

I have performed in many theatres/ with many theate companies  across Canada including Blyth Festival, Globe Theatre The Electric Company, Axis Theatre, The Vancouver Playhouse, Western Canada Theatre , and Caravan Farm Theatre where I continue to perform almost every summer.

I teach fiddle/ violin here at the gallery, not just as a skill, but as a way  to encourage creativity, and to foster a sense of community through the language of music. My approach to teaching is deeply personal, based on FUN and guided by my own experiences as a student and a performer. My role as a mother to two teen boys has taught me the value of patience, resilience, and the importance of nurturing both talent and self-expression in others.

Whether performing, teaching, or raising my children, I embrace the idea that art is a living, breathing practice. To me , it’s not just about creating or playing; it’s about connecting with others, inspiring them, and discovering new ways to express ourselves.
