Artist Statement
My work in clay feels like a natural extension of my long life in dance. I remember one of my ceramic teachers at

George Brown College, Debby Black, observing that the qualities she found in my clay pieces included “movement and elegance”. I found myself thinking: “Good; my dance life has simply morphed into a new form”.

Another ceramic teacher, Jane Agnew, suggested I do some figure drawing – she felt that would help develop my eye for my work in clay. I subsequently went regularly to the weekly open life-drawing sessions at the Gerrard Art Space gallery, where several of the drawings you see here were created.
Some of the work in this retrospective show was made several decades ago, and some is very recent. The clay dancing figures are reminiscent of my lengthy career in contemporary dance.
